Admission Requirements, Quotas and Evaluation

Quotas, Admission Requirements and Other General Information Related to Students Admissions (Including Transfer Student Admissions) to the Graduate Programs (MA With And Without Thesis)

                 

1. Candidates applying to master's programs must graduate from undergraduate programs or be a student in the last semester of their undergraduate education for conditional pre-admission. 

2. Applicants for conditional pre-admission who are students in the last semester of their undergraduate education must submit their graduation documents on the final registration date, or a document approved by their University stating the date of their graduation, or a graduation certificate obtained via e-Devlet. In addition, graduation information must be found in YÖKSİS. Candidates who cannot graduate before the final registration date will not be registered even if they have been admitted to the Institute as primary candidates. 

3. The records related to the candidates’ university, their GPA, etc. will be received through YÖKSİS (Higher Education Information System). For this reason, those who do not have YÖKSİS account are required to complete the necessary registration procedures via their University from which they have graduated or will graduate. Candidates whose records cannot be received through YÖKSİS will not be able to complete their application process. Those who have graduated / will graduate from a university abroad will personally enter their information to the system themselves. Those who cannot find the name of their university in the system may select the “Abroad (other) university” option. When detected, the application / registration of those who have submitted false information will be canceled even if they have been selected / registered to the program as primary candidates.

4. The candidates who have graduated / will graduate from a university abroad must have their grades calculated based on a 4-point or 100-point grading system in their transcript. This calculation will not be done by our University.

5. Those who have already registered to a Master’s or Doctorate program at another university have to disenroll from their existing program before registering to our Institute. It is not possible to enroll and continue in more than one graduate program at the same time, except non-thesis master’s programs.

6. In the same semester, one may apply to only one master’s program with thesis, however, one may apply to a maximum of two non-thesis master’s programs. Candidates applying to two departments should pay attention to the interview dates of the departments they are applying for. The information about place and date of the exams and oral exams will be announced on the website of our Institute.

7. Confirmed documents and information by our Institute cannot be changed or deleted.

8. For the application to the program, minimum ALES/GRE/GMAT score requirement for Turkish citizens is 60. ALES or an equivalent exam is not required for those who apply to the quotas reserved for foreign students or Master’s without thesis programs. (The scores of this exam are valid for 5 (five) years from the date of their announcement.)

9. Certificate of Foreign Language (English) Proficiency:

9.1. Turkish citizens must have a minimum score of 60 from an English Proficiency exam held by YÖK/ÖSYM or from an international English language exam the equivalency of which is recognized by YÖK, in order to be accepted for Master’s with thesis program in English.

Those who have studied for at least three years and graduated from a secondary education institution in a country where English is spoken as native language, are exempted from the English language score requirement if they officially document their status.

9.2. In order for Turkish citizens to apply for Master's programs with Thesis whose language of instruction is Turkish, they must have obtained at least 40 points from the central foreign language exams accepted by YÖK or an equivalent score from the international foreign language exams whose equivalence is accepted by ÖSYM. There is no foreign language requirement in non-thesis master's programs.

9.3. In order for foreign candidates to apply for the Master's program with thesis in English, they must have obtained at least 60 points in the central English language exams accepted by YÖK or an equivalent score in the international English language exams accepted as equivalent by ÖSYM.

If the applicant's native language is English or he/she has graduated from an undergraduate program taught in English in the country or at a foreign higher education institution whose equivalence is recognized by YÖK, they are not required to bring a foreign language certificate.

9.4. In order for foreign candidates to apply to Master's programs whose language of instruction is Turkish, they must have an official document showing that they have obtained at least B2 or equivalent points in the Turkish proficiency exam conducted by Marmara-TÖMER, Yunus Emre Institute or one of the Turkish teaching centers of other universities in Turkey (Turkish Proficiency Certificate). Provided that they meet the other conditions for application, candidates who do not have one of these documents can register the program by signing a letter of undertaking to learn Turkish within the scope of pre-admission with the condition to learn Turkish. If such candidates gain the right to enroll in the program, they are registered within the foreign student quota. With the conditional pre-admission to learn Turkish, the candidate undertakes in writing to attend the Turkish courses offered within the University for at least one academic year and to pass the Turkish exam conducted by the University with the required score. The candidate who does not sign the undertaking or does not fulfill the requirements of the undertaking loses his/her right to be a student. Candidates who continue the Turkish courses for one semester and get the required score from the above-mentioned exam will also gain the right to become a student. (The Turkish language courses offered by the University are subject to payment. The candidates are required to pay the tuition of those courses.)

Turkish proficiency certificate is not required from those who have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program whose language of instruction is Turkish in any higher education institution in Turkey or abroad.

9.5. Turkish proficiency certificates of Marmara-TÖMER, Yunus Emre Institute and other universities in Turkey will also be accepted as foreign language certificates in order to meet the second language requirement other than their mother tongue from foreign candidates who apply to our Institute's Master's programs with Thesis. Candidates must have an official document showing that they have received at least B2 or an equivalent score in the Turkish proficiency exam.

10. The scores of language exams recognized by YÖK / ÖSYM are valid for 5 (five) years beginning from the date of their announcement. The scores of international language exams recognized by YÖK are valid for a period of 5 (five) years beginning from the date they were taken if there is not a validity date specified on the certificate.

11. Candidates who have not taken the written exam for the assessment of their professional knowledge will not be allowed to take the oral exam. The students are selected for the oral exam by the related admission committee based on the evaluation of the scores of ALES, GPA, the written exam for the assessment of the professional knowledge and other principles determined by the University Senate. The number of students selected for the oral exam will be twice as many as the program quota.

12. Candidates are obliged to attend all exams and interviews announced by the relevant Department. Otherwise, they will not be considered for the evaluation.

13. The candidates from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) can apply to the quotas reserved for Turkish citizens. However, they must meet the requirement of having a valid ALES score of the related program.

14. Applicants holding a Blue Card or dual citizenship can apply only for the quotas of one nationality.

15. Those who apply for the quotas reserved for Turkish citizens are considered as they are the citizens of the Republic of Turkey. Those who apply for the quotas reserved for foreign applicants are considered as they are the nationals of a foreign country. It is not allowed to change the status of nationality after the submission of application. Candidates who were previously registered in the application system and wish to change the information about their nationality should submit their requests via https://destek.marmara.edu.tr/ within the application period.

16. Those who apply for the quotas reserved for foreign applicants are subject to the payment of a contribution fee / tuition which is 18.000 TL.

17. The fee for the Non-Thesis Master's Program is determined as 900 TL for each credit. No refund will be made to candidates who voluntarily cancel their registration from non-thesis Master's programs.

18. For substitute candidates:Among the applicants for the graduate programs, a list of primary candidates as many as the announced quota of the program is prepared from highest to lowest score based on an evaluation of ALES score, GPA, written exam for the assessment of professional knowledge and the oral exam. Other successful candidates are placed in another list as substitutes. A list of empty spots left by the primary candidates who do not register to the program during the registration period will be announced for the registration of substitute candidates. The announced substitute candidates will pre-register to the program during the pre-registration date(s) by submitting a petition. This petition is taken to determine the candidates who have gained the right to register the program. Those among the substitute candidates who do not submit a pre-registration petition cannot gain a registration right even if their scores are higher than the ones who submit the petition. The pre-registered candidates by submitting a petition will be ranked from the highest to the lowest in accordance with their scores. The substitute candidates as many as the empty spots in the candidate’s list up will be announced for final registration. The substitute candidates entitled for final registration will apply to our Institute for final registration on the relevant date(s). (Because substitute candidates’ list will be determined based on submission of the petitions, it will be announced on the web page of our institute.)

19. Certificate of Equivalency (obligatory for Turkish citizens) Turkish citizens who have completed their undergraduate or graduate education abroad are required to submit a certificate of diploma equivalency obtained from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).

20. School Recognition Certificate (for foreign applicants) it will be submitted to our institute during the final registration. This certificate can be easily get from "e-devlet portal" at turkiye.gov.tr adress, if you are able to have an account.

21. No excuses will be accepted for missed applications and registrations on the relevant due date(s).

22. All documents uploaded to the system must be certified and fully legible, otherwise they will be inadmissible.

23. Do not sign out the application system without being sure that your preferences and all stages of application are completed. The mobile phone and e-mail information provided by the candidates who will apply is important. In order to receive accurate and regular information, please provide your current/active e-mail and mobile phone information. Mobile phone notifications will be sent free of charge.

24. The programs that do not reach a sufficient number of students may not be opened. The sufficient number of students to open a program is determined by the Institute.

25. The documents will be checked and approved by the staff of the Institute. Therefore, it is advised to have all the documents ready with you during the application.

26. Transfer Students;Students who have completed at least one semester and have been successful in all courses in a graduate program at another higher education institution can apply for transfer to the graduate program opened at Marmara University. Candidates applying for transfer must meet the foreign language and valid ALES score requirements.

27. To apply for transfer, the documents will not be submitted online, but will be submitted directly to the institute. 

28. Required documents for those who apply for transfer:

          • A document stating that the candidate has no disciplinary punishment (It can also be stated in the transcript)
          • Academic transcript
          • Contents and curricula of the courses taken (approved by the issuing institute)
          • Photocopy of Turkish Identity Card
          • Student certificate (the student’s date of registration must be specified)
          • ALES and Foreign Language Certificate

29. Scientific Preparation Program:

In accordance with Article 13 of Marmara University Postgraduate Education Regulation dated 5 October 2017, which students will be required to register the scientific preparatory program and how long it will be is determined by the recommendation of the examination commission and the decision of the Graduate School Administrative Board and announced to the relevant students.

In addition, in accordance with the 3rd paragraph of the article 19 of the above-mentioned regulation, with the proposal of the head of the department and the decision of the Institute Administrative Board; the student may take a maximum of three courses from the undergraduate courses in order to be counted towards the course load of the non-thesis master's program in which he/she is registered and a maximum of two courses from the undergraduate courses in order to be counted towards the course load of the master's program with thesis in which he/she is registered, provided that the courses chosen have not been already taken during the undergraduate education or scientific preparation program.
